Should Civilians Sacrifice?
A Head Constable was having a cup of tea along with his fellow mates in the evening. This seemed just like any other day for them until they heard bullets firing at a distant location. Having no clue about what happened, they had to run towards the spot to find out what’s going on. They figured out that three armed men, probably terrorists, entered a premise and were shooting everyone they found. A few managed to escape while others were still trapped inside. Without hesitation, the Head Constable informed the higher authorities demanding for forces and entered the premise with the other constables to rescue the civilians.
They saw a lot of people lay on the floor, dead. With no much time to think, they split to go different parts of the premise and rescue as many people as they could. The constable found himself in a position where he saw a lady in the corridor, looking at a person pointing the gun towards her from a distance. The constable couldn’t have a glimpse of the other person due to a wall, and without giving a second thought, he rushed to save her. He made sure that he stood like a shield and tried to take down the terrorist with his pistol but it was too late! Bullets were fired from the other end, the constable took it all, ensuring the safety of the woman.
This is quite a common scenario we watch in the movies and we all are influenced by it. Is there a different perspective to look into this? Well, we are habituated seeing people from Army/Police sacrifice for us. Should Civilians Sacrifice too?
Before diving in or raising my opinion, let us all be practical for a moment and think big! Here’s my mathematical approach:
- A Terrorist typically kills 10 members in his/her lifespan. The worse case scenario could exceed more than 10
- If a civilian sacrifices instead of the soldier, the soldier can kill more terrorists during his/her service to the country
- Even if the soldier kills 2 such terrorists, he/she has indirectly saved over 20 lives.
- On the other hand, if the soldier sacrifices, there could be an unknown dangerous outcome in the future!
This clearly entails that our sacrifice adds a lot more value, even to our country. After all, ‘Sacrifice’ is the greatest form of Love! Whatever situation there is, we should always be ready to face it. The common difference is: They put their life ahead of us whereas, we only think about ours!
